Fiberglass Decor Buying Guide

What to know when choosing fiberglass sculptures, planters and decor for hotels, restaurants, gyms, retail and landscape projects — from material to care.

What is fiberglass (GRP)?

Fiberglass is a composite made by curing glass fibre layers with polyester resin (GRP: glass-reinforced polyester). It is hand-laid into a mould, holds fine detail, and is both light and strong.

Compared with concrete, stone and plastic

General differences between the materials most often compared for commercial spaces:

  • Weight: fiberglass is far lighter than concrete or stone of the same size, making transport, installation and floor loading easier.
  • Durability: it flexes under impact instead of shattering; concrete can chip or crack.
  • Form freedom: almost any shape, logo or mascot can be moulded.
  • Compared with rotomoulded plastic it is stiffer, offers a more premium finish and custom sizes.

Indoor or outdoor?

For outdoor pieces ask for UV-resistant gelcoat or automotive paint, freeze-thaw suitable resin and drainage holes (for planters). Indoors, surface texture, colour matching and fire/escape-route rules come first.

Choosing size and proportion

Choose sculptures and planters for the distance they will be seen from. Entrances and lobbies suit large pieces (over 100 cm); tables and corridors suit human-scale items. For planters, also consider root volume and wind load.

Colour and finish options

Fiberglass takes almost any finish:

  • Matte, satin or gloss paint; RAL code or brand colour
  • Metallic (gold, bronze, chrome look) and aged effects
  • Stone, concrete, marble and wood-look textures

Installation and fixing

Because it is light, large outdoor pieces must be fixed with anchors, embedded fixings or ballast plates. Wall panels and relief logos are hung with hidden fixings. Tell the manufacturer the floor/wall type before ordering.

Care

A damp cloth and mild detergent are enough; avoid abrasives and solvents. Outdoors, a yearly check and protective polish extend service life. Small scratches can be touched up with matching paint.

Questions to ask before ordering

Clarify these with your supplier:

  • Location (indoor/outdoor), size and quantity
  • Colour/finish sample and approval process
  • Lead time, crating and shipping method
  • Fixing details and warranty terms

FAQ

Does fiberglass fade outdoors?

With UV-resistant gelcoat or automotive paint the colour lasts for years; regular cleaning in direct sun is still recommended.

Do I need a drawing for a custom design?

No; a photo, sketch or logo is enough. The manufacturer can prepare the design and 3D model.

What is MARBB's minimum order?
